Der Kanal wurde zwischen 1663 und 1681 erbaut und zählt seit 1996 zum Weltkulturerbe. Über rund 230 km verbindet er Toulouse mit dem Etang de Thau, der per Wasserweg über Sete in den Canal du Rhone à Sète eine Verbindung schafft. Der ehemals für die Warenversorgung per Schiff konzipierte Kanal hat heute als Wirtschaftsroute seine Bedeutung verloren, dagegen als Revier für Hausbootkapitäne und natürlich für Womofahrer gewonnen. Auf den alten Treidelpfaden kann der Urlauber von heute reiten, wandern und radeln. Bootsfahrer haben auf dem Kanal zahlreiche Schleusenmanöver zu fahren, sehr beeindruckend ist die 6fach Schleusentreppe bei Béziers/Fonsérannes. Für den Wohnmobilisten führt der Weg oft am Kanal direkt entlang. Ebenso wie der Canal du Midi ist auch die Garonne gezeitenunabhängig und stellt mit ihrem Seitenkanal eine Verbindung von Mittelmeer und Atlantik dar. Wer mit dem Wohnmobil den Garonne Seitenkanal entlang fährt, kann auf 190 km über 50 Schleusen auf dem Weg von Toulouse bis an den Fluss Tarn bewundern. Ebenso wie längs des Canal du Midi verfügt auch die Gegend um die Garonne und ihren Seitenkanal über einen gut erhaltenen Treidelpfad, der auch hier bei größter Sommerhitze unter schattigen Platanen zum radeln oder wandern einlädt. Der Stellplatzführer bietet viele echte Stellplätze, Campingplätze und Parkplätze am Kanal du Midi und der Garonne, die sich gegebenenfalls zum übernachten eignen. Hier, wie in allen Ländern gilt, dass man sich bei Parkplätzen für eine Übernachtung eventuell nochmals vor Ort schlau machen muss, zu schnell ändern sich Vorschriften und Regeln in den einzelnen Ländern.
