Arles, Information and images

  • <994/983500> <994/983509> <994/1120124> <994/1120129> <9> <9> Arles was first a Celtic settlement, then colonized by the Greeks and later elevated to a city by the Romans.. There followed times of decline, but in the late Middle Ages, the city experienced a renaissance, witnessed by the many remaining magnificent monuments.. The stately townhouses of the old town are mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries.. <9> All Roman and Roman buildings of the city have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the Roman Amphitheater (Arena), the Ancient Theater, the Cryptoporticus, the Roman Baths of Constantine, the St. Trophime Cloister, the portal of the Cathedral of Santa Trophime and the Alyscamps, starting point of the route of Arles, one of the three routes to Jacobus of Compostela: the way of Arles, or the Via Tolosa.. <9> <9> Today Arles is a lively little town with 52,000 inhabitants, which is very interesting for tourists.. It´s easy to explore on foot or by bike.. However, not only the city itself, but also the surrounding area is very varied.. <9> <9> The country of Arles is characterized by three different types of landscape that extend around the city: <9> <9> * The Camargue between the two Rhone arms forms one of the most beautiful European natural landscapes.. It is best known for the wild white horses of the Camargue.. Particularly noteworthy is the large number of bird species that are native to this area.. Impressive are the numerous flamingo colonies, whose tender pink falls from far in the eye.. Most of the Camargue is used for agriculture, vegetables, fruits and rice, while a small part of it is a pure nature reserve.. <9> <9> * The massif of the Alpilles, land of vineyards and olive groves.. The Alpilles are a small, easily accessible massif.. With its enchanting olive groves and limestone cliffs so typical of Provence, it is ideally suited for walks and hikes, cycling and horseback riding.. North-east of Arles rises in the Alpilles the town of Les Baux, a fascinating castle village from the 14th century, destroyed at the behest of Louis XIII and end of the 19th century.. was restored.. From the plateau of the city and the surrounding defensive walls offers a fantastic view of the delta of the Rhone, the Vallée d ´enfer, the Höllental and the Camargue.. Who says Les Baux, must also say Crau.. A trip to the only stone desert in Central Europe, the Crau near Saint-Martin-de-Crau, is simply a must.. <9> <9> * The Crau, a stony plain with steppe character, with a large population of birds.. <9> Until the last century, the Crau was one of many stone steppes along the Mediterranean coast.. They were formed by deposits of boulders and gravel of large rivers, as here the Crau d´Arles, this was the Durance, which changed its course after the last ice age.. As a result, the gravel surfaces fell dry and the Crau emerged.. The Crau d ´Arles is the only larger contiguous remnant of these steppe-like landscapes and it houses a variety of adapted animals and plants.. <9> <9>
