  • Once upon a time, Royan was a fashionable seaside resort until the city was destroyed in 1945 in three quarters.. In the 50s and 60s, it was rebuilt according to fashionable contemporary tastes and with special consideration of the sea facing side.. The development of the coast follows the bow of the ´Grande Conche´, a bay, over 600 meters.. <9> Special sights sin <9> The Eglise Notre-Dame <9> The original elliptic-shaped reinforced concrete church has a 60-meter-high pointed tower.. <9> The Royan marina is one of the Atlantic Coast´s largest marinas, alongside La Rochelle and Arcachon.. There is also a small but fine fishing port with a fleet of about 30 ships.. <9> <9> The Phare de Cordouan <9> The 66m high lighthouse on an island in the Girondé estuary was a true marvel in the late 16th century, when it was built.. The upper part of the building was renovated in the 18th century.. On the first floor are the apartments of the king.. The tower height is reached by a staircase with 301 steps.. From Royan you can get there by boat.. <9> <9>
