- Zwischen 950 und 1150 erbauten die Herren von Lobdeburg die Burg, die zugleich Kern und Anfang der Besiedelung der Stadt war und als Veste gegen die Sorben diente.
In 1278 die Vögte von Gera die Herren und sie vererbten dieses Lehen an die Grafen, später Fürsten von Reuß. Es existiert eine Urkunde der Vögte von Weida datiert aus dem Jahr 1369 , in der Lobenstein erstmals als Stadt genannt wird. Um 1550 erhielt die Stadt durch die Heeres- und Handelsstraße Nürnberg - Leipzig größere Bedeutung und bereits 1620 hatte Bad Lobenstein eine eigene Münzstätte.
Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg wurde viel zertstört. Sowohl von den Schweden als auch von den Kaiserlichen. Von 1647 bis 1824 ist Lobenstein Hauptstadt Reuß Lobenstein.
Christian Gottlieb Reichard (1758-1837), konstruierte hier 1797 einen ersten Globus.
Bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts blühten in Bad Lobenstein und Umgebung Erzbergbau und Tuchmacherei
