- Boniface, with its churches and monastic foundations in the years 723/24, laid the foundations for the city.. <9> The city is one of the germ cells of the Christianization of Central and Northern Germany, but also of the medieval German Empire.. Through its location on the border between Saxony and Franconia in the Middle Ages, Fritzlar has been the site of fierce battles for centuries.. <9> Charlemagne had a Palatinate here and in 1118, 1244 and 1259 synods of the Roman church took place here.. Again and again Frizlar was a bone of contention between the electors of Mainz and the Hessian electors.. <9> So it is today a Catholic enclave in largely Protestant Hesse.. <9> <9> Fritzlar is today an economic center.. <9> Fritzlar is known for its well-preserved medieval townscape with numerous half-timbered houses and a largely preserved city wall, which surrounds the medieval city center.. Important buildings are the Fritzlar Cathedral and with a documentary mention in the year 1109 the oldest town hall in Germany.
