  • Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg

has almost 2 million inhabitants in 105 districts, in the Hamburg metropolitan area even nearly 4.3 million people, more than 2,500 bridges, about 60 percent of the city area are green areas, about 10% water surfaces , 98 museums, over 100 attractions, 2. 190 restaurants, but only 3 campsites, 2 sites for campers and a variety of parking with overnight accommodation.. The urban area is 755 square kilometers and extends from Duvenstedt in the north to Sinstorf in the south and from cracks in the west to Altengamme in the east..

    History

Charlemagne had the fortress built in 832 for the first time, after which the city now has its name.. The award of duty-free and market rights by Emperor Barbarossa in 1189, is still considered the birth of the city of Hamburg.. With the accession to the Hanseatic League in 1360, trade flourished in and around Hamburg, also because Hamburg served as the North Sea port of the then very powerful city of Lübeck..

In the 16th century many wealthy and active merchants lived in Hamburg and the city itself was one of the richest cities in Europe.. Therefore, it is not surprising that the first German stock exchange was founded in Hamburg in the 16th century..

A terrible catastrophe hit Hamburg in 1842 when fire broke out in a cigar-making shop (Deichstrasse 44).. On Nikolaifleet stored highly flammable goods such as cotton, hemp and especially alcohol.. In order to keep the flammable alcohol away from the fire, they took him out of the store and dumped about 350 barrels of schnapps into the fleet.. Unfortunately, no one thought that in the current low tide, the schnapps could not drain, the alcohol was thus in the canals in front of the house.. In addition, the firefighters took their extinguishing water from the fleet - then pumped then the high-percentage alcohol in the flames..

So that Hamburg joined the Reich customs territory in 1881, Bismarck secured the city a free port in which goods could be stored undeclared and transhipped..

In 1949, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg became an independent federal state..

    Points of Interest

1.. You should have seen the following streets :

    • Jungfernstieg with Alsterarkaden, highly presentable shopping street
    • Mönkebergstraße, a typical shopping street
    • Reeperbahn, the ´most sinful mile´ of the city
    • Herbertstrasse, the traditional brothel street, closed society for men
    • Beckstraße with Augustenpassag 19th-century proletarian milieu..
    • Deichstraße with the last remnants of the old Speicherviertel
    • Elbchaussee, main traffic connection between City and the ´sophisticated´ Vietel
    • Eppendorfer Landstraße and Eppendorfer Baum, an experience with long-established specialty shops and boutiques
    • Große Elbstraße with fine restaurants and chic loft offices, lunch at fish wholesalers, the restaurant ´Zum Elbblick´ with the singing innkeeper and the oldest Semmann pub ´Zum Schellfischposten´ in Carsten-Redder-Str.. 62

3.. Discovery tour with the oldest subway

On the ring route U2 / U3, Hamburg´s oldest subway line, passengers have the opportunity to travel through the most important areas of the city without having to change trains.. Drive the tour counterclockwise, ie from the jetties towards the main train station.. The line U 3 goes on the almost 100 years old ring line via Eppendorf, St. Pauli, Zentrum and Berliner Tor.. 4 ,. Boat trips

Boat trips can be made both on the Alster and the harbor..

There is the easiest option, the Alsterrundfahrt, which takes just under an hour.. Uhlenhorst, Winterhude, Eppendorf, Harvestehude, Rotherbaum - all these districts have their green Alster shore, and this can be conveniently viewed from the ship..

The Alster cruise is a remnant from the days when steamers were still public transport.. Nine stations are called up, from the Jungfernstieg to the Winterhuder Fährhaus and the whole thing back, which takes less than two hours, but you can get off at any time.. B. at Fiedler´s Café «Hofweg 103» or at Bobby Reich, and there take a - thanks free ticket - small liqueur..

The canal trips lead far into the canalized Osterbek, Stadtparksee, Goldbekkanal and Rondeelteich or alternatively via Leinpfad-, Insel-, Skagerrak- and Brabandkanal..

The approximately 20 km long tour takes three hours to Bergedorf in the Vierlande.. About the Dove-Elbe with its meadows, fields and leisure captains that is already a veritable trip.. The ship is docking in the center of Bergedorf, within walking distance of the beautiful moated castle.. For the return trip, the S-Bahn offers.. A tip: Reserve tickets for this tour..

    Information can be found at: <1003> Online Information Alster Tourism}

The classic Hamburg harbor cruise has its own fascination.. A magic of wanderlust, adventure and freedom.. It leads from the jetties destined for steamboat traffic past old veterans like the ´Rickmer Rickmers´ through the Speicherstadt depending on the tide «water level» in the modern port of the present..

You experience part of the gigantic goods turnover in a confined space of almost 110 million tons and get to know the vibrant harbor edge as a human, hard-working, creative and culturally valuable pearl necklace from Hamburg..

Directions to Oevelgönne, Waltershofer Hafen, Container Terminal, Köhlbrandt Bridge, Refinery, Shipyards and Dry Docks of Blohm & Voss, Sandtorhöft

7.. In order not to be discovered as a tourist yourself, you should avoid the following pitfalls in Hamburg:

    • At night on the Reeperbahn alone!.
Avoid every argument, every bump and the small and dark back roads..
    • Buy drugs!
Notorious meeting place is the Kirchenallee.. Do not stand at the main train station and pay attention to your belongings!
    • Sit flat!
Talk the way your beak has grown, but do not ´imitate´ Plattdütsch or Missingsch..
    • Be on the Rush Hour!
Avoid the inner-city traffic between seven and nine in the morning or between five and seven in the evening.. When it rains or snows, it usually gets worse.. Many hamburgers leave your car outside and take the subway or suburban train.. This is especially true for us camper vans with thick ships..
    • Dress inappropriately!
In Hamburg, the gentleman does not wear shorts.. With a glittering gold necklace, a thick Rolex watch, an open shirt and a tan-colored complexion, you will immediately be placed in the nursery milieu.. With a subtle costume or blue blazer for gray pants, you are almost a Hanseatic
    ..
    • About prices mosern!
Hamburg is expensive.. Every big city is expensive.. Do not moan!

  • As a convinced motor home enthusiast, I also lived in my ´compact´ motorhome several times during my professional activity in Hamburg and found various parking spaces for overnight stays: centrally located, easy to reach in some selected districts by public transport or even just beautiful and quiet ,.

We can not all stand in two parking spaces.. That´s why I showed alternatives in this travel book.. The tour through Hamburg and the surrounding area is up to you. A change of parking spaces in the city with constant constant noise - Port of Hamburg never sleeps - and quieter regions seems to me useful, if you want to stay longer in Hamburg..

I hope I can help you with the travel book City Travel Hamburg on your city tour in this charming city.. Have fun, lasting impressions and get through this big city jungle!

These areas were created on the basis of a new development plan from 1912. All previous residents were completely resettled after 1925 in the Jarre city and on the Veddel. The reinforced concrete buildings with clinker brick facades are characteristic of the building fabric, in which various stylistic elements were used by the architects to loosen them up. Most of the houses also have copper thatched roofs and the upper floors are mostly set back from the main front, allowing the staggered floors to open upwards. At the Chilehaus and Meßberghof, vertical elements are also made of clinker. Watt is the bottom of the North Sea on which the water almost completely disappears at low tide (low tide). The constant alternation of water (high tide) and land (low tide) characterizes the Wadden Sea and creates a unique landscape. The Wadden Sea offers many birds and fish a resting place and a source of food. This route part 2 goes from Hamburg to Denmark.
