Kaufbeuren lies on the edge of the Allgäu Alps and has a long history that dates back to the Middle Ages.
The city was first mentioned in documents in 1150 and over the centuries has played an important role as a trading center and administrative center. Kaufbeuren was a member of the Swabian Association of Cities and developed into an important trading center for cloth and linen fabrics.
Over time, the city has been hit by wars and conflicts several times, including the Thirty Years´ War and World War II. Despite these challenges, Kaufbeuren has preserved its historical heritage and is now known for its well-preserved old town.
The old town of Kaufbeuren is characterized by narrow streets, picturesque half-timbered houses and historic buildings. One of the most famous sights is the Town Hall, an impressive late Gothic-style building built in the 14th century.
Another important attraction is the five-button tower house, which is considered the oldest residential building in the city. It was built in the 13th century and is an impressive example of medieval architecture.
Kaufbeuren also offers a variety of cultural events and festivals, such as the dance festival, which takes place every July. During this historic festival, traditional dances are performed and period costumes are worn.
The city is also a popular destination for outdoor activities as it is surrounded by picturesque countryside. Hiking trails and cycle paths offer the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
