  • Cologne will celebrate the 200th birthday of the composer Jacques Offenbach, a son of the city, with a large music program in 2019.. This includes concerts, opera and operetta performances, exhibitions and discussions.. The highlights are two festival weeks from 9 to 26 June 2019, in which public viewing operetta cinema, street theater and live music are planned at Offenbach-Platz in Cologne, as well as music picnics in castles and parks in the Cologne area.. Seven grand estates in the Rhein-Erft and Oberberg district offer melodies by Jacques Offenbach in a historical ambience.. These include Türnich Castle, Loersfeld Castle and the Command Castle in Kerpen, Bedburg Castle, Brauweiler Abbey and Orr House in Pulheim and Paffendorf Castle in Bergheim.. <9> <9> A touring exhibition entitled ´From Cologne to Paris to the World´ gives an overview of the composer´s life at the beginning of the Offenbach anniversary.. It can be seen from December 14, 2018 to January 13, 2019 in the Spanish building of the Cologne City Hall and then stops at other locations in Cologne as well as in Paris, Berlin and Düsseldorf.. The Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra will mark the musical start to the anniversary year with its New Year´s concert on January 6th in the Cologne Philharmonie, in which various Offenbach pieces can be heard.. <9> <9> The composer, born Jakob Offenbach, is considered the inventor of the operetta..
