Naumburg was first mentioned in documents in 1012, when at the intersection of two trade routes, the new castle of Ekkehardinger, the Margrave of Meissen, was created.. 1021 is reported in the Merseburg episcopal chronicle of the recent reestablishment of a provost at the site of the later Naumburg Cathedral.. By operating the Ekkehardinger gave 1028 Pope John XIX.. his consent to the relocation of the bishopric seat from Zeitz to Naumburg.. Until the conversion of the Reformation in the city in 1568 Naumburg bishopric, from the 13th century, the bishops resided and lived mostly in Zeitz again.. The last bishop was Julius von Pflug, who died in Zeitz and is also buried there.. Dating to the year 1030 is the foundation of the cathedral school..
