First documented in the Lichtenburg in 1159. In 1433 she went back to the Hennenbergs and remained until their extinction, in their possession.. <9> During the Peasants ´War and the Thirty Years´ War, the Lichtenburg was repeatedly looted, destroyed and rebuilt.. <9> In 1816, three merchants from East Germany bought the castle from the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and used it as a quarry.. Within a year, only ruins remained.. Grand Duke Carl August von Weimar bought them back in 1819 to save them from complete destruction.. <9> In 1843, the pioneer of the Lichtenburg community (today the Rhönklubzweigverein Ostheim vd Rhön e. V.) was founded, which takes care of the preservation of the castle until today.. <9> The castle is now a restaurant with beer garden.. <9>
