Lavena Ponte Tresa is a municipality on Lake Lugano in the province of Varese in the Italian region of Lombardy. It is located approximately northwest of Milan and north of Varese, on the border with Switzerland. The municipality has two clearly distinguishable parts: Lavena, the historical origin of the municipality, and Ponte Tresa. Lavena includes the town of Castello, which dates back to the 12th century, and the town of Villa, which was formed around the first half of the 18th century. Ponte Tresa has much more recent origins, around 1846, after the construction of the bridge over the river over which the town of Ponte Tresa runs.
