Limone-sul-garda, Information and images
Limone sul Garda is located on the western shore of Lake Garda in Lombardy and is home to 1170 inhabitants.. During the summer season, about 10 000 tourists visit the village every day, for which large bus parking lots have been built on the outskirts, as the old town is too narrow for cars.. <9> <9> The history of Limone sul Garda <9> <9> The name of the place comes from the Latin word ´Limen´, which means border (so that the place name is not, as often mistakenly assumed, on the locally grown lemons, even though the Italian word for lemon ´lime´ is the same).. <9> <9> The first settlement of the area around the Benaco (to German Benacus, the old name of Lake Garda) already took place in the Neolithic.. In the nearby Ledrotal you can still admire piles of Bronze Age stakes.. Around 600 BC, Celtic tribes inhabited the area, but they were subjugated by the Romans around 800 BC.. The history of the village resembles that of all northern Italy: first the Lombards, then Karl Magnus, the Venetian Republic, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Italian Renaissance, the World Wars and finally the Republic of Italy.. Decisive for the economic and cultural development of Limone, however, was the influence of the Venetian Republic or the ´Serenissima´ (Lucky), as it is called in this country, at the beginning of the 15th century.. <9> <9> In this epoch, Limone was able to develop from a fishing and farming village where, among other things, olives were grown, thanks to its extremely mild climate to the most northern citrus growing center in Europe.. But the mild climate alone is often insufficient for good cultivation.. Lacking fertile soil, limone had to be brought by ships from the southern shores of the lake to the growing areas.. <9> <9> Thick stone walls were supposed to protect the sensitive plants from the cold north-easterly winds.. Even today you can see the remains of the meter-high stone piles, which supported the roof construction applied in the winter.. These lemon groves were thus real greenhouses.. The irrigation of the lemon and orange trees, the fruits of which were delivered to royal houses throughout Europe, took place via a specially designed canal system.. <9> <9> Among the Habsburg family in the 19th century, besides the citrus and olives, the following products played an important economic role for this outlying town, which could only be crossed by the lake or through very inaccessible paths through the mountains reach was: magnesium (it is today the Via Benedetto Croce), paper (which was produced in the northern district of La Milanesa), slaked lime (from the Sìngol Valley at Reamòl) and silkworms whose breeding favored the mild climate of Limone.. <9> <9> World War I, however, abruptly stopped all these activities.. Limone fell victim to the border disputes between the warring powers, the Austro-Hungarian K. & K. Reich and the Italian Kingdom.. The entire area was evacuated and declared a war front.. Only after the end of the war could the inhabitants of Limone return to devote themselves to fishing and growing olives, as all other agricultural facilities had been completely destroyed.. <9> <9> It was not until 1932 that Limone began to recover economically with the completion of the western Gardesana road, which finally connected the town with the surrounding cities and thus with the rest of the world.. Since then, Limone has discovered a new source of income with tourism, and the poor fishing village soon became the most important tourist center of Lake Garda.. <9> <9> Walking and hiking trails <9> <9> Around Limone there are nice opportunities to walk, for example over the beach from the square Alessandro de Gasperi to ´Nanzèl´ or through olive groves, there are hiking trails.. <9> Wonderful views of the lake can be seen from the sun path that leads from the village square to caves where the inhabitants hid during the First World War.. <9> In July and August guided hikes are offered there by the Alpini.. <9> This is also true for guided hikes to the mountain hut Bonaventura Segala at 1215m.. This hike lasts from 0730h to 17h and is offered free of charge by the transport association.. <9> <9> <9> Attractions <9> <9> * Church of San Rocco, 16th c.. <9> * San Benedetto church, built in 1691 on the remains of a Roman basilica, 4 marble altars and a boxwood crucifix <9> <9> * many many opportunities for shopping, as well as numerous restaurants, pizzerias, taverns, bars and cafes <9 > * 2 ports
