Gschnitz, Information and images

  • St. Magdalena in Trins The mysterious mountain church St. Magdalena in the Gschnitztal (1666 m) is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in North Tyrol.. About 400 m above the valley floor, on the way to the Muttenjoch, stands the ancient mountain sanctuary on a protruding rock pulpit.. Down in the valley are the two clearly distinct settlements, the closely-built Trins and the widely scattered Gschnitz.. <9> <9> Trins, whose name is unexplored, has the distinctive Romansh settlement form with the houses crowded together on the street.. The mining symbols visible in some places in the village are reminiscent of the fact that at the beginning of modern times Trins was a mining village.. <9> <9> From the tunnels on the Muttenjoch the miners brought lead and copper.. At the western end of Trins, a mighty terminal moraine wall, divided by the Gschnitzbach, closes the front valley.. After this beautiful forehead moraine of Tyrol, the researchers name a glacial advance extending across the Alps as the ´Gschnitzstadium´.. <9> <9> History and history Older than the churches and chapels of Trins and Gschnitz is the mountain church of St. Magdalena.. The special location of the hl.. Magdalena consecrated shrine and a now dried up source under the choir led the well-known Wipptaler local historian. Hermann Holzmann, in the Magdalenakirchlein to assume the Christian <9> <9> succession of a much older pagan place of worship.. When, by whom and why the first witnessed in 1307, but much older church was built, lies in the darkness of history.. The Romanesque frescos discovered in the church on the occasion of the 1960-1972 by the academic painter Alois Höfer are among the oldest murals on North Tyrolean soil.. On the south wall Adam and Eve, as well as the flight to Egypt and on the west wall, they depict a saintly figure in prayer position, probably St. Magdalena.. A second exposed cycle of frescoes on the north wall probably comes from an outstanding Brixen master from the first half of the 15th century. He glorifies the Sts.. Magdalena.. <9> <9> The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Sts.. Magdalena.. The Trinser go today on that day and in any weather ´on the Bergl´ as it is popularly called and celebrate the Holy Mass.. Attached to the Bergkirchlein today is a small snack station for refreshment of the pilgrims and guests.
