  • Grein founded his wealth on three obstacles in the Danube, which represented a great danger to shipping.. A whirlpool, the torrent and the vortex forced the Danube boatmen to land in Grein and take pilots on board or tranship the goods onto wagons.. The ships drove empty through the rock obstacles.. In 1824 the first rock obstacles were blown up and the importance of Grein began to wane.. When the Emperor´s bride Elisabeth of Bavaria ran aground on the way to the wedding in Greiner Strudel, the obstacles were largely eliminated.. But the danger remained.. From 1900 to 1945 occurred on this section of the Danube 250 shipwreck.
