The Romans already used the convenient location at the confluence of the Mürz and Mur rivers to settle here in the 3rd century. Only a section of road and a bridge near St. Dionysen have been preserved from this era. <9> In 1263 Bruck was granted town charter and so Bruck an der Mur is one of the oldest towns in Austria. The Kornmeß and Pögl families, who enjoyed great wealth and political influence, were responsible for the city´s economic boom (16th century). The following centuries were rich in turbulence (fires, floods, dangers of war) and reached their climax in 1934 when the Heimwehr and the Schutzbund fought bloody battles in Bruck. <9><9><1001><9> <9>Today Bruck an der Mur is the fourth largest city in Styria and an important traffic junction.
