- Omis was settled very early.. Romans, Byzantines and the Naretans, who made Omis the center of piracy.. To protect their prey and spy on victims they built the fortress Peovica (Mirabella) in the 13th century.. Fortica (Starigrad) was built to protect against the Turks and the pirates of the Venetians, who took over the rule in 1444.. <9> Only fragments of the wall ring that once surrounded the city have survived.. Only the east gate near the marketplace was spared devastation.. Next to the church Sv.. Mihovila begins the ascent to the Mirabella Ruin.. <9> <9> <1001> <9> <9> In the picturesque old town with its palaces and winding lanes, you can still see the Venetian rule of many years.. Many restaurants invite you to taste the regional cuisine.. Fish, crayfish, frogs and the excellent lamb dishes can be found on the menus.. <9> <9> <994/1688785> <994/1688787> <994/1688786> <9> <9> The Cetina flows into the Adriatic at Omis and winds its last few kilometers through a gorge with impressive rock formations and waterfalls.. <9> It is possible to take the slow train through the gorge to the Radmanove Mlinice (mill with excursion restaurant).. Kayaking and rafting tours are also offered and can be booked in various agencies in the city.. <9> <9> <994/1688788> <994/1688789> <994/1688790> <9> A particularly rewarding destination is the ride on the panoramic Omis-Gata road.. The view from the serpentine road on Omis and the Cetina gorge is simply overwhelming.. At the statue of the Mile Gojsalica, a heroine in the battle against the Turks, it goes past to Gata.. The rafting route is 9 km long and it takes about 3 hours for this unique trip.
