Under King Petar Kresimir IV Sibenik 1066 was already mentioned in a document.. The favorable location for the trade made the city a constantly fought territory.. Under the rule of the Venetians, who successfully defended the city against the Turks, Sibenik became the largest city in the region in the 16th century.. After World War I, the Austro-Hungarian Empire followed Italy, which in 1920 had to give way to the Kingdom of Serbia.. <9> <9> <1001> <9> <9> During the War of Independence from 1991 Sibenik suffered serious damage.. The cathedral was damaged and the town hall completely destroyed.. <9> <9> The influences of different cultures are also evident in today´s cityscape..
