Kroatien 22000 Sibenik Trg Republike Hrvatske1A hundred years had to pass before what was probably the most beautiful and important cathedral on the Dalmatian coast was completed. In 1431 work began and Juraj Dalmatinac. In 1475 Niccolo Fiorentino took over the construction management and constructed the dome, which was unique at the time. He only used Bracer marble slabs, which, thanks to precise carving, interlock and are therefore self-supporting. The dome was built without any fasteners or cement.
Another special feature of the cathedral is the portrait frieze on the outside of the apse. The construction of the cathedral devoured huge sums of money and so the population was called upon to fill the building budget with donations. The frieze represents those 71 people who refused to contribute. So says the tradition.
The three-aisled interior of the cathedral is rich in art treasures. For example, the ´Tree Kings Altar´ by Fiorentino, the tomb of Bishop Sizgoric from 1454, the baptismal font and the pulpit created in 1624.
