The ´Silent People´ is a surface artwork by the Finnish artist Reijo Kela and is located about twenty-five kilometers north of Suomussalmi right next to the state road 5/E 63. It consists of about 800 wooden crosses, which are made twice a year by volunteers with summer gifts collected from donations. or winter clothing are supplied. The tops of the crosses, covered with sod and peat, give the crosses faces and, in connection with the clothing, a certain human appearance. But the people are by no means quiet, because when it´s windy, they gesticulate violently with their hands and even with their feet. The visitor should think about the meaning of the work of art. The artist himself has not yet commented on this.
