The community has around 700 inhabitants and is known for its picturesque location between the Baltic Sea and the Bodden as well as for its cultural importance as an artists´ colony. Another highlight is the extensive collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by the painter and graphic artist Gerhard Marcks, who lived and worked in Ahrenshoop from 1916 to 1925. The !Ahrenshoop Museum! is a local history museum that presents the history and culture of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst region. The !Natureum Darßer Ort! is a natural history museum that deals with the flora and fauna of the region. Grenzhus ! is a memorial and documentation center that commemorates the inner German border and the division of Germany.
