TownAhrenshoop
Ahrenshoop is a municipality on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula on the Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The community has around 700 inhabitants and is known for its picturesque location between the Baltic Sea and the Bodden as well as for its cultural importance as an artists´ colony. Ahrenshoop offers numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling and water sports as well as many cultural events such as concerts, readings and exhibitions. The art museums and galleries that exhibit works by artists such as Paul Müller-Kaempff and Elisabeth von Eicken are particularly worth seeing.
Ahrenshoop has an art museum called !Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop!. It was founded in 1913 as part of the Ahrenshoop artists´ colony and today houses a significant collection of works by the artists who worked in the region, including Elisabeth von Eicken, Paul Müller-Kaempff and Oskar Frenzel.
The museum shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art as well as permanent and special exhibitions on various topics in regional art history. Another highlight is the extensive collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by the painter and graphic artist Gerhard Marcks, who lived and worked in Ahrenshoop from 1916 to 1925.
The !Ahrenshoop Museum! is a local history museum that presents the history and culture of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst region. It displays a collection of historical objects and artifacts that document the traditional lifestyle of fishermen and farmers as well as the development of tourism in the region.
The !Natureum Darßer Ort! is a natural history museum that deals with the flora and fauna of the region. It shows exhibitions on the flora and fauna of the Baltic Sea, the Western Pomerania Lagoon Landscape National Park and the Darßer Jungle. It also offers guided hikes and nature excursions.
The ! Grenzhus ! is a memorial and documentation center that commemorates the inner German border and the division of Germany. It shows exhibitions on the history of the border and the Cold War as well as the experiences and fates of the people who lived on the border.
There are many opportunities for water sports activities in Ahrenshoop, especially sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing and stand-up paddling. There are numerous sailing schools, surfing schools and water sports equipment rental stations offering courses and rentals for beginners and advanced sailors.
The Bodden in front of Ahrenshoop is a popular area for sailors and offers the best conditions for relaxed sailing or sporty regatta sailing. The surf spots on the beaches are ideal for surfers and kite surfers of all levels. A special highlight are the SUP tours on the lagoon, where you can experience the picturesque landscape and nature up close.
