Altstadt Hannover
The origin of the old town of Hanover with its narrow streets and half-timbered houses dates back to the Middle Ages. The elliptical floor plan is still recognizable today. It stretches from the Steintor to the Aegidientorplatz. The main streets Osterstraße, Schmiedestraße and Markstraße, Köbelingerstraße and Knochenhauerstraße and Leinstraße and Burgstraße are connected by a number of small cross streets. They all run parallel to the line. Here is also the oldest Hanoverian half-timbered house from 1566 with a Renaissance facade and rear building. The Kreuzkirche, built in 1333 and thus Hanover´s oldest church, is a Gothic building with a single-nave nave.
The Leineschloss, formerly a royal residence, is now the seat of the Lower Saxony state parliament.
