The Elbe , with a length of 1095 km, the 14th longest river in Europe originates in the Czech Republic (where it is called Labe), flows through Germany and flows into the North Sea near Cuxhaven.. Moldova, Saale, Spree / Havel, Müritz and Elde accompany their course in parts. <9> The origin of the name has a pretty history, so that the fog billowing on the banks should have been the playground of elves, who gave their name to the river.. <9> Rather linguistically the explanation is that the name of ´albia´ comes for white or also ´bright water´.. The Elfenstory is more beautiful! <9> <9> Well-known and big cities like Dresden, Magdeburg, Hamburg and Cuxhaven lie on the river, which is divided into different sections: <9> <9> Oberelbe designates the section from the source in the Giant Mountains in Near the Czech village Spindleruv Mlyn (Splinderduv Mlyn) <9> With the beginning of the German upper reaches Dresden is passed until the Elbe at Torgau merges into the middle reaches and from there is referred to as the lowland river.. <9> This section ends at the Geeshacht barrage, just before Hamburg, where the river becomes the Lower Elbe.. <9> From here the river becomes tidal dependent with a tidal range near Hamburg of 3.60m.. <9> The last section then forms the Outer Elbe, which designates the region in continuation of the estuary by the Watt and is already part of the North Sea Seewater Road.. <9> <9> The German federal states affected by the Elbe are Bavaria, Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg.. <9> <9> Interesting facts about the river <9> <9> The Elbe stands for a unique cultural and natural landscape.. In the German part we are, as far as the natural protected areas are concerned, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.. <9> Here nature lovers come to look at storks, or, with a bit of luck, beavers at their expense <9> With the Womo we follow the road of the Romanesque or visit the historic Dresden, with the bike follows the sporty tourist the Elbe Cycle Route R2.. <9> <9> In the Giant Mountains, Elbe Sandstone Mountains, the Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland, national parks invite you to hike and climb on both sides of the border.. <9> You will find pine and beech forests, as well as rugged rocks and sandstones.. <9> <9> In the Elbniederung, the Middle Elbe section so just before Hamburg, there is the so-called ´Biosphere Reserve Riverside Elbe´ since 1997 with the alluvial forests in the Dessau Valley, the stock of hardwoods such as oaks, ash trees and elms.. Striking the white willows and black poplars.. <9> The fauna features beaver, otter, white-tailed eagle and black stork.. <9> In the middle Elbe area, the area designated as smoke water can be found during floods, the water partly passes through the sandy dikes.. This water forms the habitat for amphibians such as moor frog or red-bellied toad.. <9> <9> <9> <9>
