CastleGlenveagh Castle
irland Gartan Mountain, Churchill R251
The estate was purchased in 1857-57 by John George Adair, a wealthy County Laois land speculator. After marrying his American-born wife, Cornelia, construction of Glenveagh Castle began in 1867. It was completed in 1873. Adair died in 1885 without having fulfilled his dream of a hunting ground in the Donegal Highlands. Cornelia took over the management of the estate and increased the comfort of the castle and the layout of the gardens was completed. She was a well-known hostess for 30 years and stayed at the castle in the summer until 1916. From 1921 Glenveagh fell into disrepair and was occupied during the Irish Civil War. There have been other owners, with the last private owner being Henry McIlhenny of Philadelphia, who bought the property in 1937. He spent a lot of time restoring the castle and developing its gardens. In 1975 he agreed to the sale of the property to the public sector and thus the creation of a national park could take place. In 1983 he donated the castle with its gardens and most of its contents to the state. In 1984 everything became open to the public.
