update 1-22: the space itself seems to be no longer usable, but there are parking spaces on the shoulder of the street Next to the bar there is a supply, disposal option. There are also public toilets. The square is illuminated at night and is quite quiet. At the end of March the pay machine was turned off and the bar was mostly closed.
It´s 10 minutes to the old town, to the beach just across the street.

Overnight stays are definitely allowed. We were 3 campers, one said the city police had only complained about the camping chairs outside, but not the camper itself. At this time the parking lot is also free, the machines are closed.

When we were here in September 2021, there were no campervan signs at both entrances. We stayed on the parking lane on the side of the road. I think 10 € for 24 hours at the parking ticket machine. ******************* Note test mod: could it be that you were there the day before the market and was therefore forbidden for campers? I´ll leave the place on for now usable, then look at the parking patrol as you reported and can evade

Hmmm, it could of course be that the signs are only put up temporarily. However, we arrived on market day (Monday) morning, first parked away and then wanted to go to the square after cleaning up. The signs were still there the next day !? But the hard shoulder on the road is definitely an alternative!
