With this project, the Ijsselmeer was created behind the final dike from the Zuiderzee.. In the following period new land, Wieringermeer, Northeast Polder, Oostelijk and Zuidelijk Flevoland was won.. Many new cities emerged here.. Whether also the Markermeer is put dry is not finally decided.. <9> <9> On the way to the Rhine delta we visit Amsterdam and Rotterdam.. <9> <9> The ´Delta Works´ are a project for coastal protection at the mouth of the Rhine and the Scheldt.. <9> Numerous dams, locks and bridges were built.. <9> Haringvlietdam, Volkerakdam, Grevelingendam, Philipsdam, Brouwersdam, Oosterscheldedam, Veersegatdam, Zeelandbrug, Zandkreekdam, Oosterdam and Bathse Spuisluis.. <9> These structures ensure that floods endanger a significantly shorter coastal area during storm surges.. Huge freshwater and blackwater lakes have sprung up.. Wide areas can be better used for tourism today.. The shipping, especially to Antwerp, is relieved.
