- The Oosterscheldedam with the Oosterscheldewehr: a building of the delta works <9> <9> <9> 1967 had begun to build the Oosterscheldedam.. After heated debates because of the substantial higher costs, it was adopted in 1979.. <9> <9> The storm surge barrier consists of 3 separate structures between the mainland and two smaller islands.. The total length is about 3 km.. It consists of 65 concrete pillars between which huge steel gates were used..
