  • Gdansk is one of the oldest cities in Poland..   • Until 1840 the Vistula flowed through Danzig and flowed north into the Baltic Sea.. After the river had found a new estuary about 20 km to the east, the backwaters were silted up.. Construction measures made it from the mouth of the Altwassers to Danzig from the port channel.. The Polish army maintained an ammunition depot on the coastal strip which had now become a peninsula.. On September 1, 1939, the German army attacked this camp.. This started the second world war.. Only with high losses of the Germans could the Polish troops be forced to the task.. <9> In memory of this fight the Westerplatten monument was created in October 1966..
