- Thanks to the monks of the Convent of Santa Cruz do Bucaco, founded in 1628, there are more than 700 different trees and bushes in the Bucaco forest.. The colonies brought a variety of exotic plants to Bucaco and even the Pope put his protective hands over the forest.. Decorated in neo-Romanesque style, with magnificent azulejos and ornaments, this fairytale castle is surrounded by a beautiful garden in the Bucaco forest.. <9> Large parts of the monastery had to give way to the construction of the castle.. They lead past small lakes, waterfalls, chapels and springs.. <9> The Cruz Alta vantage point offers a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean in fine weather..
