    Bellinzona is a city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Ticino. The city has a strategic location as it is at the entrance to important Alpine passes such as the St. Gotthard, the San Bernardino and the Lucomagno. The city´s silhouette is dominated by the Fortress of Bellinzona, which consists of three castles, a city wall and fortifications and is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fortress is the only example of medieval military architecture of this type in Europe.

    In 1500, Bellinzona joined the Swiss Confederation after previously being under the rule of Milan. After various historical events, Bellinzona became part of the independent canton of Ticino in 1803. The city is also known for its famous carnival, Rabadan, which is celebrated for a week. In addition, Bellinzona regularly hosts music events such as the Beatles Days, Blues Session, Montebello Festival and Castle on Air. The city also offers a Saturday market and various cultural events.
