History

When exactly Tondern originated is unknown;. However, Tønder was granted city rights as early as 1243, making it the city with the oldest municipal law in Denmark.. In the Middle Ages, Tønder was a port city;. the shipment of grain and cattle made the city prosperous.. The frequent flooding of the Tønder - located on a Geest - surrounding march but were a problem, which is why around 1550 the North Sea coast was extensively diked.. As a result, the harbor gradually silted up and Tondern lost its role as a port city.. With the construction of the Højerdeich in 1861, Tønder finally became an inland settlement..
