Many centuries-old monuments can be found in the city center.. Nearly 7,000 merchants and warehouses and almost 1,300 bridges date back to the Golden Age.. 165 canals were built to facilitate the rapid distribution of import goods in the city and to the trading offices.. The Amsterdam canal belt was also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010.. The river bed of the Amstel itself - origin of the settlement - was filled in the 19th and 20th centuries, however, except for Damrak and Rokin and overbuilt.
