Lagos was the starting point for many voyages of discovery in the 15th century.. Henry the Navigator and Gil Eanes began their expeditions to Africa in Lagos.. One of the most precious ´goods´ brought from Guinea and Senegal was the slaves.. In 1444, Lagos was the capital of the slave trade.. The building «former customs administration, Praca do Infante Henrique», in which until 1820 the slaves were auctioned, can be visited..

     

A tidal wave in 1755 almost completely destroyed the city and the governor´s palace, causing Faro to become the new Became capital..

Strolling through the lovely old town, past the Ponta da Bandeira fortress, you reach the Rio Bensafrim.. Here you will find the replica of a caravel, which is used for excursions..
