deitesfrnlse Camping in Iceland

Until November 2015, Iceland had a kind of everyone´s right: you could stay overnight in parking lots with your WoMo.. This practice, however, caused major problems, since unfortunately many tourists have not been very considerate towards nature.. B. have thrown away their garbage or feces..
In November 2015, a law was passed, according to which it is no longer permitted for tourists in motorhomes / campers etc. to ´just stay there´ somewhere for one night.. You have to switch to campsites or get the permission of the respective landowner.. It is therefore strongly advised not to use the parking spaces noted in the POI Walk for overnight stays, as in many cases they are only parking spaces.. It is always pointed out with a sign ´Camping and overnight parking prohibited´..
To stay overnight you have to go to campsites.. This is not a problem as there is a campsite in every community.. The equipment and comfort vary greatly.. It ranges from the fully equipped area with washing machine, dryer, supply and disposal, children´s playground, cold and hot water to places that have no more than two toilets and a sink in the sanitary facilities..
An overnight stay for two people usually costs between 20 to 30 euros, depending on the region.. Children are mostly free.. It does not matter whether you are traveling with a motorhome, tent or caravan.. It is billed according to people.. Electricity is very expensive on campsites.. It is always charged at a flat rate, but costs five to eight euros per night..
An additional, worthwhile offer is the ´Camping Card´.. With this card, which (as of 2017) can be purchased for € 149, you can spend the night at 42 campsites around the island free of charge.. Only the accommodation tax of 111 Icelandic krona has to be paid, which corresponds to about 90 cents.. The following rules apply to the Camping Card:
A card is valid for two adults and up to four children (up to the age of 16)
The card is valid from the date of purchase until September 15th.. Then most places in Iceland are closed anyway..
A maximum of four consecutive nights may be spent in one place..
In addition to the Caming Card, you also receive a discount card that allows you to fill up at Shell and Hurricane petrol stations at a discount..
An overview of the pitches and other descriptions can also be found on the corresponding website (campingcard. Is), which also provides information in German.
