Since September 1st, 2008 there are environmental zones in the municipalities of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg.
On February 1, 2009, an environmental zone will also be introduced in the municipality of Aalborg. Rhus is expected to follow shortly.
The aim is to reduce the harmful effects of trucks, buses and mobile homes over 3.5 t with diesel engines. From now on, these vehicles must have particle filters in order to be allowed to drive in the environmental zones. Vehicles with a particle filter must have a sticker on the windshield authorizing them to drive in the capital´s environmental zone.

For foreign vehicles of the categories mentioned, proof of the particle filter based on the vehicle documents is sufficient; an environmental badge is not required.

The environmental zone covers the area within Ring 2 and Vejlands All , but does not apply to Ring 2 and Vejlands All . The police will control the environmental zone and distribute fines to chauffeurs who are stopped within the zone without a filter and environmental badge.
The obligation for particulate filters initially includes vehicles in the Euro 2 category (older than seven years), but from 2010 it will also be extended to vehicles in category 3 (older than four years). The environmental zone is signposted.
