is the Estonian capital uhd rightly known as the political, economic and cultural center of the northernmost state in the Baltics.. Consequently, the city was appointed European Capital of Culture in 2011..

The city is located on the Finnish Merrbusen, was formerly part of the Hanseatic League and has more than 400,000 inhabitants;. that is a third of Estonia´s total population..

History

Founded as a merchant settlement under the name Lindanise in the 10th century, called Reval until 1918, it was converted into a fortified town by the Danes in the 13th century.. Taani linn (in German Dansburg) is the Oldest nickname, from which the modern city name Tallinn can be derived..

In 1285, Reval became connected to the Hanseatic League and developed into a supraregional hub of organized Baltic Sea trade.. In 1346, the city was transferred together with surrounding land to the Teutonic Order..

In 1561, Reval became Swedish-owned.. A very changeable phase of development characterized by rise and chaos began..

1570/71, 1577 and 1710 wars took place with Russia..

Estonia has been independent since 1991..
