Nazare is nestled in hills and cliffs about 100 km north of Lisbon.. The former fishing village with the long sandy beach quickly became a popular tourist resort, which, despite the many tourists still retain its originality..

 

The Sitio district is 110 meters high on a cliff above the sea and is the older part of town.. A cogwheel railway has been connecting the two districts since 1889, bringing pilgrims to Portugal´s most important pilgrimage site, the Nossa Senhora da Nazare church..

     


Traditions are still well maintained.. Thus one finds women in their old costumes, whose peculiarity are seven petticoats.. Also the annual carnival parade is celebrated big..
