No matter where the route leads you through Münster: Westphalian idyll and urban life have formed a perfect symbiosis.. <9> <9> At every turn you experience these worlds almost always simultaneously.. It is probably this mixture that provides the great quality of life.. <9> <9> The interplay of old traditions and a youthful swing characterizes the lifestyle as well as the balance of medieval gabled houses and avant-garde architecture or the juxtaposition of Altbierschänke and trend location.. <9> <9> The coexistence of the worlds between Pumpernickel and Prinzipalmarkt, research and technology, Westphalian stubbornness and student openness has become a dynamic process of mutual inspiration.. <9> <9> Münster is a liveable city - not for nothing is the saying Lieber unemployed circulating in Münster as a teacher in Castrop-Rauxel.. <9> <9> In Münster there are almost twice as many bicycles as inhabitants, namely 500,000. From the student to the head of the company, from green police chief to mayor - more than a hundred thousand people in Münster swing daily to the leeze, as the bike is called in the old Masematte language.. <9> <9> Places worth visiting such as Dom, Prinzipalmarkt, Lambertikirche are deposited as POIs in the portal.. Owners of a smartphone can navigate from POI to POI locally via PoiWalk.. They each see their point of view and the nearest deposited POI.

Münster´s Prinzipalmarkt is a piece of lively city history.. The historic cobblestone street between Stadthaus tower and Lambertikirche tells of the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic League and the old merchant families.. Numerous exclusive shops and restaurants have their address here.. <9> <9> The 48 imposing houses, often with three-storey gables, date from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods.. Often, the architects of the time were inspired by the other houses, but each one has implemented his own ideas and thus gave the Prinzipalmarkt its very special charm.. An essential design element is the well-known arcade on the ground floor of the houses.. <9> <9> War and destruction did not stop at the Prinzipalmarkt: during the Second World War, most of the buildings were completely destroyed.. In the fifties, the old facades were lovingly rebuilt at the same height - some true to the original, most with simpler shapes and some modern style elements.. <9> <9> At the Prinzipalmarkt a large part of Münster´s city life takes place: here guests of the state are welcomed and festivals are celebrated, people stroll, shop and enjoy life.. <9> <9> (see my set POIs of different viewpoints and views of the principal market)

Münster gets another work of art: Gerhard Richter designed a Foucault pendulum especially for the baroque Dominican church.. On June 17, 2018, the artist ceremoniously handed over his installation ´Two Gray Double Mirrors for a Pendulum´ to the city.. The new art space in the early Baroque monument is then permanently open to the public.. Richter, one of the most renowned artists worldwide, donates the object to the city of Münster.. <9> <9> The pendulum is anchored in the high crossing dome of the profaned church.. On a 29 meter long rope, it swings exactly four centimeters above a circular floor surface with a diameter of around four meters.. <9> <9> As it swings continuously, the plane under the sphere slowly turns east due to the earth´s rotation.. This permanent movement, but also the church interior and its visitors are reflected in four glass panels, which are attached in pairs in front of the walls of the crossing dome and also belong to the work of art.. <9> <9> With the Foucault pendulum, the French physicist Léon Foucault in 1851 succeeded in proving the Catholic Church that the earth rotates in our solar system.. <9> <9> Anyone walking through Münster will encounter art everywhere in the city.. The large open air show ´Sculpture Projects´ alone, which attracts a huge international audience every ten years, has provided over 40 sculptures in public space since its premiere in 1977.. <9> <9> Internet: www.. city-muenster.. de / dominican church |. www.. sculpture-projects-archive.. de

In Osnabrückerland, hikers can follow historical traces: In memory of the Peace of Westphalia, which officially ended the Thirty Years´ War on October 24, 1648, a hiking trail connects the two main negotiating locations, Münster and Osnabrück.. The approximately 75-kilometer route between the town halls of the two cities follows as far as possible the historical traces of the mounted messengers called Friedensreiter.. The Westphalian Peace Trail not only crosses the crest of the Teutoburg Forest, but also leads past historic mills and stately buildings.. <9> <9> Further information on this and other hiking routes can be found in a new hiking map that can be downloaded from the Internet.. The 370th anniversary of the peace agreement can also be celebrated by bike: the peace route connects the historic town halls of Münster and Osnabrück over a distance of 175 kilometers.. <9> <9> www.. peace route.. de
