TownInsul
Insul was first mentioned in 1269 as ´Oensel supra Aram´. Documents with Esell (1669), Eßel (1728), Insel (1758) and Oesel (1849) have survived. The name is traced back to island. From the location it is still recognizable today that the Ahr also had a southern branch of the river in earlier times. The area where Insul is located belonged to the County of Are in the 12th century, and in the middle of the 13th century the County came with all its possessions to Kurköln. Under the French administration, Insul belonged to the Mairie Adenau in the canton of Adenau. After 1815, Insul became a Prussian municipality belonging to the mayoralty of Adenau. In terms of the church, Insul belonged to the parish of Schuld, which already existed in the 10th century. Around 1570, Insul was mentioned in the documents as a branch of Schuld and in 1631 a chapel in Insul. [000.24]
