Piacenza, Information and images

  • Piacenza is the capital of the province of the same name and is located near the confluence of Po and Trebbia and has about 105 000 inhabitants.. <9> Placentia, the oldest military camp in northern Italy, was founded in 218 BC.. Founded by the Romans.. The city wall was not finished yet and the colony had to defend itself against the attacks of Hannibal and the Celts.. <9> Piacenza had great importance in the 12th and 13th centuries, since the city was an important member of the Lombard League.. <9> Together with Parma, the city became a duchy in 1545 under Pier Luigi II Farnese.. The Farnese family reigned until 1731. Under Alessandro Farnese, the city experienced a great boom of which still today the beautiful palaces testify.. <9> The historic center with Piazza Cavalli, with the city´s landmark, the Gotico (Town Hall), Piazza del Duomo and Largo Cesare Battisti with their shops and pubs are within easy walking distance.. <9> <9> <994/1622540> <994/1633739> <994/1633738> <9>

  • The Emilia Romagna region with about 4.5 million inhabitants is bordered to the north by the Po, to the east by the Adriatic, to the south by the Apennines and to the west by Piedmont and Liguria.. <9> The region is divided into nine provinces: Bologna, Ferrara, Forli-Cesena, Modena Parma, Piacenza, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia and Rimini.. <9> Tuscan Etruscans have already settled in this area.. The Romans founded colonies along the Via Emilia as well as strategically important sites on the Adriatic.. <9> This region, rich in economy, trade, art and culture, has always been contested.. The various powerful genders, the popes, the Bourbons and the Habsburgs fought for this important territory.. It was not until 1859 that Emilia Romagna was incorporated into the Italian royal family.. <9> Testimonies of this war-rich time are the many castles and forts.. Every major settlement was protected by city walls and had their defenses.. These are still largely preserved today and shape the image of Emilia Romagna.. <9> <9> <994/20532> <994/1635948> <994/1635949> <9> <9> As different as the mentality of the people in the regions is;. they all have something in common.. <9> <9> <121> The love of their homeland and ancient traditions <122> <9> The ancient traditions are today celebrated in the form of festivals.. Thanks to the community spirit of the inhabitants, there are still the ´roots´ and not everything was subject to tourism.. <9> <9> The tourist information gives exact calendar of events, but I would like to mention some of the celebrations here: <9> <9> Carnevale di Cento (Ferrara) was already celebrated in the 17th century.. Grandiose carnival cars move through Cento.. <1001> Link} <9> <9> Madonna di San Luca (Ascension, Bologna) <9> The Madonna di San Luca is carried in procession from San Pietro to San Luca.. <1002> Link} <9> <9> Sposalizio del mare (Ascension Day, Cervia) <9> The highlight of the ´Sea Wedding´ is the boat parade of fishermen.. <9> <9> Festa medievale (last Sunday in May, Grazzano Visconti) <9> Costume parades and horse-racing in the historic center and around the castle.. <1003> Link} <9> <9> Giornate medievali (last week of August, San Marino) <9> Parades in historical costumes, concerts and tournaments enliven the historic center.. The competition of the archers is especially interesting.. <9> <9> Buskers Festival (last week of August, Ferrara) <9> There is a colorful hustle and bustle at the ´Festival of Jugglers´ in the city.. Jugglers, fire-eaters, clowns and musicians from all over the world come to the city to present their skills.. <9> <9> Mostra del fungo e del tartufo (first weekend of October, Bobbio) <9> Market stalls and pubs offer delicious mushrooms and truffles.. <9> <9> <121> The love of good food <122> <9> <9> Traditional, varied and tasty, the cuisine of Emilia Romagna.. Many specialties without which we could not imagine the Italian cuisine, have their home in Emilia Romagna.. <9> <9> Parma ham, Parmesan cheese, mortadella, balsamic vinegar, zampone and, of course, tortellini, filled differently depending on the season, are probably the most famous.. <9> The ´Bolognese´ sauce, which has gained world fame with fresh, homemade pasta, does not need to be further introduced - everyone knows it.. <9> Piadina, a flatbread, is served with squacquerone, ham, sausage or pecorino and is a substitute for pizza in Emilia Romagna.. <9> <9> <994/1635954> <994/1635955> <994/1635957> <9> <9> <121> Open-minded, helpful and hospitable - even to strangers <122> <9> <9> The first Impression is deceptive, as so often.. Suspicious and rather grumpy is sometimes regarded as a stranger.. But a greeting, a conversation and already the ice is broken.. Helpful and above all hospitable people are suddenly confronted with one another.. So it can easily happen that, before you know it, is invited to a meal with the family or offered a place to stay in the garden <9>
