  • From <121> Den Helder <122> a short trip to the island <121> TEXEL <122> is recommended. <9> Each of the island villages is beautiful and worth seeing in its own way: <9> <9> <994/1171312> <994/1171312> <994/997127> <9> <9> <121> Den Hoorn <122> <9> The charming church of Den Hoorn with its white tower seems to be the most photographed object on Texel. The beautiful gables are reminiscent of the time when pilots and whalers populated this high-altitude village on the southern tip of Texel. <9> You can quickly reach the beach via the path through the surrounding dunes. In today´s village of Den Hoorn there are various good restaurants and a theater restaurant. This southernmost village on Texel with the striking little church was built after 1398,after the De Oude Hoorn branch was burned down by the ´Hoeken´ during the party dispute in the so-called ´Hoekse en Kabeljauwse Twisten´. The present village was built on one of the boulder clay deposits, ´t Klif, and was located on the southeast side by the sea. <9><9> <121> De Koog <122> <9> De Koog is the only real seaside resort on the island. The village offers everything a tourist could want. After a day at the beach, you can go to the Dorpsstraat in the center of De Koog, sit on a terrace, have a delicious meal or go shopping in one of the shops. In the evening you can also go out in the cafes and discos in De Koog. <9> Long before its heyday as a seaside resort, De Koog knew a wedding as a fishing village. The name De Koog comes from the word ´cooghen´,The name for the dikes at the beginning of the 14th century. <9><9> <121> De Cocksdorp <122> <9> De Cocksdorp is located on the northern tip of Texel, near the lighthouse. There is a real holiday atmosphere in the youngest village on the island. Tourists from the neighboring holiday parks enjoy visiting the many restaurants and shops in the Kikkertstraat. From the dike just outside De Cocksdorp you have an excellent view of the Wadden Sea. <9> De Cocksdorp in the north is the youngest village on Texel. The village was founded in 1835 near the small port that was located at the point where the Roggesloot flows into the Eierlandse Gat. <9><9><121>Eierland<122> <9>Eierland currently forms the northernmost part of Texel and includes the polder of the same name and De Cocksdorp. However, Eierland was originally an island of its own. It was called Eierland, because the birds´ eggs were lying around here ready to hand in the spring. In addition, an enormous number of rabbits lived here. That is why the island was leased. The leaseholder of Eierland also maintained the ferry connection to Vlieland for centuries. So today´s ferry already had a predecessor in the 16th century. <9><9> <121> De Waal <122> <9> De Waal is surrounded by lands. It is an old village of quiet beauty. There is a museum, a gallery and a good restaurant; all other facilities can be found in nearby Den Burg. <9> De Waal is the smallest village on the island and just like Den Burg,Oosterend and Den Hoorn built on one of the mud fillings. On the north-west side of De Waal (Polderweg) you can clearly see how high the village is compared to the Polder Waalenburg. De Waal has about 400 inhabitants. <9><9> <121> Den Burg <122> <9> Den Burg with its medieval, round street layout gives many people the impression of a town. It is the largest village on the island; around half of the almost 14,000 islanders live here. The central facilities and settings are located here, such as the VVV, the outdoor pool and the cinema in Den Burg. And don´t forget the extensive range of shops, cafés and restaurants around the center of Den Burg. <9>The Protestant church of Den Burg am Binnenburg was built around 1400 on a foundation of a small Romanesque church made of boulder blocks. The church was badly damaged during the Georgian uprising at the end of the Second World War. The striking building was restored immediately after the war. <9><9> <121> Dogs on the island <122> <9> Texel is an island of space, tranquility and lots of nature. You will find a wide variety of landscapes such as dunes, beaches, forests and polders. An ideal environment to go out with your four-legged friend. Due to the variety in nature, the island is also sensitive. Examples are breeding and foraging birds, rabbits and Scottish highland cattle.Texel is a sheep island and these characteristic animals graze on many pastures. In many places, the pastures are not separated from the paths by ditches but by grass-turf walls and are therefore easily accessible. A dog chasing sheep can easily do a lot of damage. <9> <9> On a leash or not <9> The municipality of Texel endeavors to keep the areas where dogs are required to be leashed as small as possible and to limit the mandatory leash to part of the year. This applies above all to the natural and dune areas as well as parts of the Hors. The line requirement also applies on the guarded beach sections and the nudist beaches. <9> It is important that you keep your dog on roll in the non-leashed areas. The four-legged friend comes running to you immediately, when you call him. <9><9><121> Nudist beaches<122><9> <9> Nudism is allowed at the following two beach spots. Hoorndersla ½ km south of Stake 9, Den Hoorn. Krimsla 1 km south of stake 28, De Cocksdorp. The nudist beaches are signposted and are not monitored. Nudist stays are only allowed on the beach and in the water, but not in the dunes. There are no beach pavilions or other facilities here. <9><9><121> Wadden excursions<122> <9> Wadden hikes from one tip of the island to the other are not possible, but you can take part in wadden excursions. The dry mud flats appear bare, but teeming with life. On this nature excursion you will discover what is going on under your feet. Registrations are possible at EcoMare, Tel.0222-317741. <9> Source and further ONLINE information <1001> on the very extensive TEXEL homepage} <9> <9> <994/997130> <994/980983> <994/980978> <9>
